Achimelech told Dovid there was a sword wrapped in a garment behind the ephod.


The ephod looked like an apron. Below is a link to a picture of the ephod worn by the כהן גדול. An ephod was considered a prestigious garment. For example, Shmuel's mother made him an ephod and in Shmuel II Dovid is wearing an ephod.
