וַיְהִי בִּגְזֹז אֶת צֹאנוֹ בַּכַּרְמֶל

Sheep shearing was a time for great celebration in the olden days. First, there is the mitzvah of ראשית הגז (giving the first shearings to the kohein). Second, the newly shorn wool can be sold or made into clothing which is a cause for joy. This would be a time to share the good fortune with those who were less fortunate.
